Crufts was established in 1876 by its namesake Charles Cruft. Reluctant to join the family jewellery business he secured a job with a dog cake seller and the resulting obsession with canines flourished into what is the world's biggest canine show with extensive TV coverage. Crufts starts today, for the 119th time and runs until Sunday, culminating in, 'The Best In Show' Competition.
Man's best friend is as popular as ever and the NEC in Birmingham will be bursting at the seems with earnest owners keen to see their pooches suceed. To add to the fun, bookmakers Paddy Power are offering a bet on 'The Best In Show', aware of the broad audience and fervour that surrounds this event. There is as much loyalty to individual dog breeds amongst the canine owners' fraternity as there is with any football supporter. The passion urging 'hounds' to beat 'toys' will be as tangible as any Manchester Derby. The market closes at 5pm today however so any hope to assess the form is prohibited.

Rumours will abound over the next four days as to which dog is moving through the group competitions with ease as well as the particular personal preferences of the Cruft's judges. Backstage, back biting will be as pointed as at any beauty pageant, as pooches are primped and preened for their big day. Historically 4 terriers (including last year's winner a Sealyham Terrier), 2 hounds, 2 utility, and 1 of both gun dog, toy, working and pastoral groups have won in the last 10 years.
Those best placed to have a bet on this market will be those who have trapsed around the country in the past year to the various regional qualifying events or who have followed the dog publications. They will have seen the young pretenders suceeding and the rumour machines will be whirring in the same way as a scout clocking Rooney's potential as a schoolboy. A Gundog may be favourite to win the top prize but whoever wins they will certainly be offered a contract with a dog food company. Unfortunately Paddy Power are not offering this as a market!
