The reality TV betting markets are whirring into action even though 2012 is barely underway. Celebrity Big Brother is easing into another soap opera, Dancing On Ice is delivering its usual combination of triumph and catastrophe and there is now even a book with Paddy Power as to the identity of the next Strictly Come Dancing host. The bookmakers are clearly eager to broaden these special bets and maintain the interest of the new genre of punters that they have already attracted.
The recently knighted Sir Bruce Forsyth has been a staple of Saturday night TV for decades and many have attributed Strictly's success on the safe pair of hands that his hosting has provided. At 83 Forsyth handed the glitter all trophy to McFly's Harry Judd in December with a reassurance from the BBC that he had the job for as long as he wanted it. However there is sure to come a time in the not too distant future when age finally catches up with him.
The Paddy Power bet does not stipulate that the host will change next year but are simply asking who will be the next host when Forsyth leaves. Whilst the veteran entertainer is certainly a king pin in the proceedings, no man is bigger than the show itself and having beaten the X Factor on viewing figures this year the BBC is not going to cancel the show if he retires.
Of those names offered for a punt Vernon Kay is the favourite at 6/4, with professional dancer Anton Du Beke close behind at 17/10 . Whilst names like John Barrowman and Philip Schofield have appropriate CV's these two front runners make sense as the major possibilities. Vernon Kay is well versed now in presenting and has an easy style which sits well on family TV slots. The fact that he is married to co host Tess Daly could offer some real chemistry that the BBC would be interested in. On the other hand , Anton Du Beke has become a real favourite with the viewers and has often been compared to Forsyth physically and personality wise and has the added advantage of understanding the genre and hence being able to take on the judging panel with their acerbic comments
