As the autumn fades into winter some old familiars in the broadcasting world pop up, the rafts of reality TV shows to keep the nation pinned to their sofas appear and then as a herald of the Christmas season arriving the BBC offers up a resume of British Sporting Talent with its 'Sports Personality Of TheYear'. Trailers are now appearing to remind the populus of the event and the runners and riders are becoming clearer. Betting on Sports Personality Of TheYear is an interesting affair. At the beginning of the year Eddie Izzard was being promoted via a Facebook campaign to be nominated for the yearly accolade after his extraordinary series of marathons, but it seems he has now fallen out of favour. Jockey McCoy is still the favourite, thoroughly understandable and well deserved, but in a World Cup year it is a sign of England's dismal performance that the only footballer on the book is Paul Scholes, who retired from international football.
Clearly the fortunes of the football team are a reflection of their absence on the book, whereas by contrast, the glory of the golfers at The Ryder Cup has resulted in golfing names being peppered throughout. Out in front is Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell, who not only had a blistering time against the Americans, but won the 2010 US Open, his first win on the PGA Tour. Not far behind McDowell in third place on bookmakers Paddy Power's list is Lee Westwood, who whilst still chasing that elusive first major, reached the heady heights of golf's World Number One after his consistent performances throughout the season. Colin Montgomerie, who captained the Europeans in Wales also appears, but at 33/1 is clearly felt not to have been as significant in securing the trophy as the players.
Jessica Ennis is understandably amongst the favourites, having won the World Championship heptathlete title in 2009, she began the year by winning the World Indoor Championships in Qatar, before going on to win gold at the European Championships, setting a new European Championship record. She was also awarded European Athlete of the month in January, March and May. Gymnast Beth Tweedle having won The 2010 World Championships on the uneven bars is clearly suffering from the lack of publicity that her sport receives, with only a 25/1 chance of winning the BBC's sporting crown in Paddy Power's market.
Whilst there have been some remarkable individual achievements this year, unfortunately the likelihood of securing this particular title has more to do with the popularity and publicity of a particular sport. Clearly Tony McCoy who has broken every record possible over his career finally won the Grand National should have been in pole position for years, but with the enormous hype and media coverage expended on The Ryder Cup, the golfers may once again snatch the prize out of his grasp!
