The Eurovision circus is about to begin this Friday, 12th March, with the BBC programme, 'Your Country Needs You' as six Uk Eurovision hopefuls compete for the opportunity to represent their country in Oslo on 29th May. Bookmakers Paddy Power join the mele offering an extra flourish to the ever reluctant observer of this annual carnival with a betting market on who will clear this first hurdle.
The show was aired initially last year, with Llloyd Webber seeking to restore the Uk's standing in Europe with his own composition and last year's find Jade Ewen. This year Pete Waterman takes the helm looking to improve last year's fifth place with the help of his old mucker Mike Stock, of Stock, Aitken and Waterman fame, who launched many successful careers in the 80's particularly one Kylie Minogue. The song is written but kept under wraps however, only three of the six acts will get a chance to perform it as the show progresses. Waterman will be accompanied by Bruno Tonioli and Jade Ewen on the judging panel but the final decision will be made by a public telephone vote on the night.
To bet on this outcome requires quite some research if not a crystal ball. The Odds offered on the six unknown eurovision hopefuls seem to be based on a knowledge of Waterman's style, the strange demands of Eurovision and the little information that is available about the contenders. As an old fashioned vocalist and lover of swing Josh leads the field at the moment. Karen, who beat X factor's Joe McElderry in a singing contest last year offers bubbly enthusiasm whilst Alexis Gerrard a stage school showman could provide a level of performance and camp that Europe would appreciate.
Group Uni5 have been formed just for this competition so may not be as tight as desired but can dance too which may be to their advantage. The other band Miss Fitz, a good looking trio from London may be hunting the Girls Aloud supporters but may find it harder to engage the audience as well as Josh. The outsider Esma Akkilic, with smouldering good looks, Kurdish born and raised in Austria, has the potential to be a more apt choice for Oslo but audiences are more likely to vote for who will belt out a good tune on the Uk show than to think too far ahead.
Eurovision has always been an enigma. Reviled and scoffed at by all, especially UK residents and yet still drawing huge audiences. No one wants to be seen to take it too seriously but every country is still secretly desperate to win. As the winner of 'Your Country Needs You' is revealed Kitchener must be spinning in his grave that he is associated with this fluff. Indeed, Waterman will begin feel the pressure of a nation's expectations as Oslo approaches but most fun may be gained by a bet on 'Your Country Needs You' than expecting to have anything other than an awkward evening's entertainment this Friday.
