Channel 5, who spent huge sums to bring the reality TV juggernaut Big Brother to their screens, has clearly decided that in order to get value out of their purchase and the dwindling viewer numbers they must use it more. So as 2012 begins they have launched yet another Celebrity Big Brother series, although the notion of Celebrity is as ever an odd one. These days there appears to be another world inhabited by fading stars and wannabes that exists in reality TV land, a sort of warehouse of idiosyncrasy , where the public can sift through the sale items and choose to reintegrate the characters into real career land or not. Of course for bookmakers like Paddy Power, this reality TV train provides fuel for the growing novelty markets, which at a time of recession/ economic downturn is increasing.
The novelty punter should know by now that the winners of any of these shows has to be good humoured, modest, generous and a team player. Prima Donnas never get anywhere and the public is well aware that any arrogance is misplaced in this arena, if their careers were soaring they would not contemplate the humiliation that shows like Big Brother can easily incur.
The contestants on this series contain the usual mix. Glamour models, dwindling singers, soap stars ( who bring their fans with them) and 'resting ' actors . Then there are characters like Denise Welch who has clearly decided that after her outing on 'Dancing On Ice', that she could make a career out of the reality TV genre.
At present Natalie Cassidy who gained fame by playing Sonia in Eastenders is riding high in the popularity stakes. Her success comes from her willingness to join in, her lack of 'side' and her apparent sense of fairplay. Way ahead of the field at 9/4 to win, the other characters are going to have to loosen up a lot and step out of their egos to be in with any sort of a chance.
The first round of nominations has taken place and Pineapple Dance Studio's Andrew Stone and Irish model Georgia Salpa are the first to be put up for eviction. With nominations taking place after only 3 days, the process is a little cruel, but then if you want the glory you should be aware of the rules and be prepared to join in. Georgia is 8/11 favourite to go ahead of Andrew at evens, but his insipid reaction to his nomination last night could easily shorten his odds by tomorrow night.
The world of reality TV is a strange place but there is money to be made by the canny novelty punter who can see through the brittle personalities that are on show.
