Cheltenham Festival Weather Odds: Could Snow Stop Play ?

All eager racegoers and punters will be keying themselves up for the highlight of the National Hunt season next week with four days of class horse racing at the Cheltenham Festival. Eyes will be scanning form, history,prices, going and jockeys but bookmakers Paddy Power have added another ingredient to the mele with a market based on whether or not snow will fall on the proceedings.

It is not at all unusual for Paddy Power to offer a book on 'The Black Stuff', in fact regularly they offer a market on how much Guiness will be sunk during the event, especially on St Patrick's Day which always falls over the festival but a bet on 'The White Stuff' is unusual. The book closes at 10pm tomorrow night, to avoid too much information being garnered from long term weather forecasts, but with snow already falling in Scotland today it has not become beyond the realms of possibility that it could move further south.

For a bet to succeed 1mm of snow has to fall on the parade ring from from 00:00 15/03/2011 to 18:00 18/03/2011, for which odds of 10/1 are offered and an alternative market offers odds of 11/1 that Dublin will turn white from 00:00 to 23:59 on 17/03/2011, St Patrick's Day. The most recent meteorological event to interrupt the racing was in 2008 when the festival was suspended as a result of heavy storms, although the cancelled day was added on to the end of the week so punters were still able to enjoy the races.

After two very harsh winters in the Uk and a global predisposition to tumultuous weather events, like the recent floods in Australia, volcanic eruptions in Iceland and earthquakes in New Zealand, the possibility of a mere 1mm of snow falling at Cheltenham in early March does not seem so ridiculous. In fact Paddy Power may find hthemselves drawn to ever increasing meteorological books as global warming takes centre stage in the media. It is unlikely that Cheltenham Festival enthusiastswould ever become more interested in the BBC weather man than Ruby Walsh or Tony McCoy but it may be something they should bear in mind when contemplating a flutter on the amount of 'The Black Stuff' that could be consumed. If the weather is going to be particularly parky surely 'The Black Stuff' will be regarded as medicinal and consumed with more enthusiasm!
