Betting on the Christmas No. 1 slot in the music charts had become a foregone conclusion in years gone by with the winner of the X Factor lifting this additional accolade as a matter of course. However, last year a Facebook campaign protesting against Simon Cowell's corporate stranglehold on the charts led to 'Rage Against The Machine' securing the top spot proving that with sufficient support and marketing anyone can do it. However, whilst history has proved that the X Factor winner can be beaten, online bookmakers Paddy Power, still have Cowell's proteges in pole position at 4/7 to triumph.
Paddy Power's conviction could well arise from the identities of those competing in this year's series. Whilst clearly a gifted vocalist, last year Joe McElderry had a sound more suited to the West End than to the current music charts. This year's favourite Matt Cardle however, has a very recordable voice and style that would not sound at all out of place on the radio. Rebecca Ferguson, whilst most well known for her renditions of ballads than hip hop, has such an extraordinary vocal breadth and depth that no one could accuse Cowell of touting mediocrity in the music industry or lowering standards. Cher Lloyd too whilst not on the same vocal par as Rebecca has performance skills and rapping prowess to match many current chart toppers. Only One Direction feel rather manufactured and old hat.
Odds Comparison Charts For X Factor
The Trashmen, who are second favourites at 11/4 represent the same protest vote as last years Rage Against The Machine but it is less clear that their success will be repeated. Not only are this year's contestants less corporate than in past years but sitting in fourth position is Gamu Nhengu who is altogether more likely to mount a challenge. Nhengu created a storm of controversy at the beginning of the series when her well documented dismissal from the judges' houses section by Cheryl Cole in favour of Katie Waissel rattled loyal fans of the programme. Visa issues were heralded as the underlying reason for her failure but her pitch perfect vocal brought affection and sympathy which could well be demonstrated by support for her single. The fact that it is also being sold in aid of charity could further boost its chances for success.
Christmas always throws up something quirky and sentimental in the charts whether it's 'Grandma' or 'Two Little Boys' and this year it's 'The Christmas Sandwich' which as it's name suggests celebrates a simple festive snack sung by John Cage. Musically broad or deep it is not, but it could well be a favourite singalong at Christmas parties across the country and will be a welcome change from Slade's 'Merry Christmas'.
