Magic Murray Is Top Of The World And Odds On For SPOTY

Andy Murray's rise to the top of the tennis world rankings ensures he is now an odds on favourite for the 2016 Sports Personality of the Year Award. The Scot has been irresistible during the past six months and he looks nailed on to claim a third SPOTY crown on Sunday 18th December...

Andy Murray

Since finishing third in 2012, Murray has been named Sports Personality of the Year in 2013 and 2015, with 2016 surely his year as well. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a stellar calendar year, winning eight titles, including Wimbledon and Olympic gold, and racking up an eye-watering 73 match wins ahead of the ATP World Tour Finals.

Murray usurped Novak Djokovic as world number one last week as he became the first British player to top the world rankings since 1973 and he is now 1/2 odds on to be named SPOTY (Bet 365).

Alastair Brownlee

Murray's price contracted from 5/4 to 1/2 last week but his success saw Alastair Brownlee's chances of claiming the SPOTY award drift out from 11/4 to 4/1 (Sky Bet) The brilliant triathlete landed Olympic gold again in Rio and he further enhanced his reputation by carrying his ailing brother over the line at a World Triathlon Series event in Mexico...

Laura Trott

Brownlee was part of Britain's most successful Olympics team, as was Laura Trott, who is currently 10/1 for the SPOTY. Trott successfully won the team pursuit and omnium for a second Olympic games running and she became the most successful British female Olympian in the process.

Mo Farah

Athletes have won the SPOTY award on seventeen occasions previously and Mo Farah is 12/1 (B365) to add to that tally after winning both the 10,000m and 5,000m in Rio.

The Outsiders

Outside bets for the award include Gareth Bale (25/1) but just five footballers have won previously and even the Welshman's heroics with Wales at Euro 2016 are unlikely to be enough for him to land the crown.

Finally, Lewis Hamilton is a massive 100/1 outsider but he is still in contention to overhaul Nico Rosberg at the top of the Formula One World Championships with just two races left. The 2014 SPOTY winner remains something of a marmite figure with the British public though and it would be a big ask for him to claim the title for a second time.
