July 23rd 2011 will now be engrained on the minds of many for time eternal, a generation now have the opportunity to compare notes as their parents and grandparents did in the past, with where they were when Kennedy or Lennon was shot, when Marilyn Monroe or Elvis were found dead or how they heard the news that Princess Diana had been in a car crash. Amy Winehouse's life and death, have all the ingredients to establish her very quickly as a legendary figure in the media like all the aforementioned characters and as a generation reveres her memory the marketing men will be lined up to take advantage with re releases of her songs and souvenirs of her short life. Bookmakers Paddy Power's fingers are on the pulse of this unravelling story and are offering odds on who will play the lead in a Biopic of Amy's life.
There is nothing more tragic or compelling than an undoubted talent wrapped in a tortured soul, who has garnered mile after mile of column inches in their lifetime and dies alone. As a nation and indeed a world which has become hypnotised by celebrity, spoon fed daily titbits of information about the lives of those in the spotlight, there is a sense of ownership and friendship of people who are in reality, nothing more than performing strangers. It is this 'ownership' that leads those who have been fans whilst their idol has been alive, to seek solace through more and more questions and deeper voyeurism when they die. There will be, if there are not already, conspiracy theories in abundance, attempting to explain why the seemingly healthy Ms Winehouse succumbed once more to an addiction to drugs and alcohol that she had apparently conquered.
No one has yet claimed even to be making a biopic about the star, but Paddy Power is shrewd in recognizing there will of course be one, and by establishing a book on the subject is feeding exactly the same interest that the movie producers will be unable to resist. The movie makers will have to allow just enough time to have passed for fans to be willing to accept the actress playing her, but not so long that the sharpness of her tragic demise has blunted in any way. Paddy Power stipulate that the bet applies to, "the actor that plays the main role of Amy Winehouse in the first biopic of Amy Winehouse that gets general cinema release in UK and/or US before the end of 2016", underlining their belief that it will be a mid term market.
Lady Gaga winning the role at odds of 6/1 would obviously be a coup for the producers, but as yet her acting abilities have not been tested and her choice could be seen as offensive to the hardcore Winehouse fans. She is not favourite however, that honour is accorded to Brit Billy Piper and it does make good sense. Piper who first came to the public's attention as a 16 year old pop singer, married DJ Chris Evans and their wild hell raising lifestyle was well documented. This experience, coupled with the fact that she has now established herself as an actress of some note who is unabashed about tackling meaty and challenging roles would situate her perfectly for taking this part. Kelly Osbourne's name appears at 12/1 probably more because she was a friend of Amy's and has dredged the depths of rehab herself than because she is a director's choice. After all Kelly's reason for being in the spotlight came as a result of having it shone on her by her parents rather than stepping into it at the request of those who saw her talent. Amy and Kelly may have been friends, but there their stories divide. Piper would certainly be a good choice and should she be offered the role, surely she would jump at the chance.
