The British Music Industry is all set for its showcase on Tuesday when it will give out its annual Brit Awards. Whilst now a much slicker show than in previous years many artists will be strutting their stuff looking to claim they are the most current and representative of popular culture. Peacock egos will be parading but who is likely to win? Can The nation's treasure Cheryl Cole really fight off competition with her huge support across the country? It looks unlikely.
Bookmakers Paddy Power offer a wide range of markets on the awards, one of the most coveted being the 'Best British Female' category in which Cole lies an unimpressive fourth in a line up of six at 4/1. Leading the field is Laura Marling who couldn't be more different in her style and musicianship. Singer songwriter Marling is as far from the processed X Factor sound and personna as is possible. The music industry has an uncomfortable relationship with Simon Cowell's talent show, recognizing that many of the winners have proved to be vocally adept but musically unimaginative. For Cheryl Cole to win this category, not only as a judge on the X Factor, but herself the product of a TV reality show would leave the industry open to enormous criticism. The battle for this particular award will certainly be between Marling and Ellie Goulding, representing as they do the roots of contemporary British Music.
In the 'Best British Male' category Plan B looks to have the competition all wrapped up at odds of 1/2 and whilst Tinie Tempah is not far behind at 13/8, he has the opportunity to be rewarded elsewhere in the 'Breakthrough' category. The 'Best British Single' category which almost equates to the Best Film Award at the Oscars, sees boy band The Wanted usurping both of the above contenders edging to the front at odds of4/5. The dance/pop mix was the group's debut single and surged to Number One in the charts with critical recognition for its lyrics and composition, especially the string phrasing at the beginning.
Take That Look assured of winning 'The Best British Group' section after a barnstorming return to the fold, especially now that Robbie Williams has completed the original line up. It is hard to imagine that they could be trumped by anyone else this year. Another hot favourite is Rihanna in the 'International Female' slot, she has certainly won over British audiences especially with her appearance on this year's X factor, which is an intruiging twist to the musical debate.
