Betting On Facebook Reaching 1 Billion Users: On Course For 2013

Social networking site Facebook is rarely out of the news these days and is it any wonder when it was announced two weeks ago that they had hit their 500 millionth user. Inevitably with that number of people using the site many hours in the day, the news stories will come thick and fast, from every possible angle. The statistics in themselves are constantly news worthy and it is no surprise that bookmakers Paddy Power, observant of the phenomenon are offering betting on Facebook reaching 1 billion users.

The film 'Social Network' opening in October with Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake, directed by David Fincher, is already predicted to be one of the highest grossing films in history on the basis that there are so many active participants on the website, that many will want to see the chronicle of its inception retold on the big screen.

Becoming one of the greatest advocates and demonstrators of democracy FB, whilst still guided by the original creators could simply grow and grow, it's only problem being that size will lead to abuse and distrust. Privacy issues, paedophilia and inappropriate use of pages for the likes of killer Moat have already been bubbling to the surface, although so far nothing has really effected growth. However if hackers, governments or big business is seen to be using the site for political, economic or abusive ends the road will be clear for another group of student geeks to step in!
