The first programme of Popstar To Operastar has aired and as expected there are already some surprises, the biggest of which is that Midge Ure has already left the building despite being the 5/1 second favourite with bookmakers Paddy Power to be the outright winner. Betting Directory did suggest caution with punting on this programme before the artists have performed advice that has proved its worth.
X Factor winner Joe McElderry went into the debut show as odds on favourite. This was not a surprising position for him to be in for several reasons. His success on the X Factor is very recent, he will bring a following from that programme with him and his voice and manner lend themselves very well to this format. On Sunday he duly delivered a tuneful, emotive and charismatic performance for which he continues to find himself at the top of the leader board, but there has been a lot of movement in the odds with the other contestants.
Midge Ure found himself in the bottom two with Melody Baker so her position as outsider now is unsurprising, although now she has more of an idea of what is expected and will be keen to work hard and keep her place in the line up. Cheryl Baker is the one to watch and odds of 9/2 could easily shorten in the coming weeks. Starting out at a price of 10/1, it was not only an accomplished performance that has brought her odds in but her personality. Reminiscent of Denise Welch's character on Dancing On Ice, Cheryl has that girl next door attitude, modest and full of humour that is sure to win favour with the viewers. Not only is she personnable, but unlike Denise who was clearly never going to win the skating competition, she appears to have a real aptitude for the task at hand.
Claire Richards, former lead singer of, Steps warrants her price shortening from 10/1 to 6/1 and with the first show out of the way and nerves calming may also improve and challenge the front runners. Big voiced Jocelyn Brown might have been expected to do more with her natural tones in the world of Opera but did not settle into the genre as comfortably as she might have been expected to. Andy Bell and Joe Washbourn seem to be testing the water at the moment and need to find more confidence if they are to be anything other than passengers.
The show is an unexpected success and delight. The mentors Katherine Jenkins and Roland Villazon are genuinely passionate about their craft and the interjections of the critics Simon Callow and Vanessa Mae are witty and sharp and dont feel too manufactured as can often be the case with judging panels on reality shows like this. Having completed several weeks of tuition the competitors have learnt enough for the audience not to feel embarassed but instead keen to follow their journey through the classics. Whist McElderry has all the credentials to win Cheryl Baker has the carrot of reviving a career to drive her through the hours of practice. She definetly looks like the one to watch.

Joe McElderry 4/6
Cheryl Baker 9/2
Claire Richards 6/1
Andy Bell 6/1
