Oscar 2011 Betting: Best Actress And Foreign Film Categories Worth A Look

All eyes will be focused on the Oscars in Hollywood on February 27th to see if a Brit can hoist one of the most prestigious awards aloft. The hopes of the nation are sitting on Colin Firth's back for his performance as King George VI in 'The King's Speech' and bookmakers Paddy Power have him at astounding Odds of1/33 to achieve this ambition. Indeed we have already commented on this gamble in The Betting Directory emphasizing the ever increasing chance that he will win the Best Actor Oscar after being pipped to the post last year by Jeff Bridges, but there are of course a number of other betting opportunities that are worth looking at, namely the Best Actress oscar and The Best Foreign Language Film.

The Golden Globes have regularly been a barometer for Hollywood and as Colin Firth lifted his award, so did Natalie Portman for her performance in 'Black Swan', an involved and dark portrayal of the ballet world. However it is worth underlining that Portman won a Golden Globe in 2005 and was nominated for an Oscar the same year as best supporting actress in 'Closer' and did not pick up the Oscar so the system is not infallible. Odds of 1/16 underline the expectation that this year will be different with her closest competition coming from Annette Bening in 'The Kids Are Alright' at 6/1, but it seems to be commonly accepted by critics across the movie world that Portman's acting was the most impressive in 2011.

Unusually the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film is well worth a look. Whilst for many this category often slides past unnoticed, especially those who are only seduced by celluloid spawned from Hollywood, this year one of the films has flagged up a performance that has led to an Oscar nomination. 'Biutiful', directed by Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez has Spaniard Javier Bardem playing the lead role for which he has been nominated in the Best Actor category alongside Colin Firth.

Bardem's reputation as a real craftsman is growing year on year, he has already won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in the Coen Brothers' 'No Country For Old men'and whilst he is unlikely to pip Firth to the post this year in his Spanish speaking role in 'Biutiful' the fact that his performance is recognized signals the film's success in the Best Foreign Language Film category. At 11/10 this is certainly a punt worth thinking about!
