Royal Wedding Odds: Best Man and Honeymoon Destination Betting

Now that the festive period is over and the January blues are well and truly setting in, more and more coverage of the imminent wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton will be used as a fillip to the ever deepening economic crisis and the unpalatable cold weather. Bookmakers Paddy Power have a number of books on the Royal Wedding Odds but two in particular catch the eye - betting on the best man and the honeymoon destination.

Whilst Royal pomp and pageantry can be relied upon to ground the nation in history and tradition, which reassures in an ever changing world, this young couple seem keen to create a more open and modern monarchy that is less remote. Whilst the Queen and monarchy are central to the governance of the country, her power is actually negligible, so shows of ostentatiousness in this day and age coupled with the specific challenges of a country with huge national debt, requires the young royals to be mindful of the country's psyche. It will be a fine balance between proudly displaying a nation's heritage and over egging the amount of money the whole process will cost.

Westminster Abbey was an interesting choice of venue for the wedding and yesterday's news that Kate Middleton will travel there by car and not royal coach, as has previously been the case, shows that this ceremony will differ from those in the past. However, surely one of the best bets around has to be 1/25 that Prince Harry will be the best man. Whilst friends are often Best Men and the Van Cutsem brothers are known to be lifelong friends of the prince, brothers Harry and William have been so bonded by their mutual grief since Princess Diana died, that it seems almost impossible that William would want anyone else at his side.

As to the book regarding their honeymoon destination Kenya is understandably favourite at 11/4. Prince William is reputed to have proposed in Kenya and as a country Kenya has long and close ties with the monarchy as a whole. In the fifties the eyes of the world focused on 'Treetops' in Kenya when the now Queen learnt of herimminent enthroning on the death of her father George VI. Whilst the paparazzi are able to infiltrate anywhere on the planet, Kenya has always proved to be more protective than most places. Interestingly, second on the list is Scotland at 7/2, which may well be based on the notion that this young couple will be keen not to appear too flash and could well be the surprise outcome.
