Whilst The X Factor bows out this weekend, its competitor Strictly Come Dancing has an extra week to run. The scheduling of these giants this year has meant that there is barely an overlap on a Saturday night so that viewers can become embroiled in both programmes and indeed punters can become engrossed too. This weekend the semi finals of Strictly Come Dancing will be played out , a daunting final push requiring two dances, which according to Paddy Power is likely to be a step too far for the BBC's presenter Alex Jones. Robbie Savage left this weekend after a much better than expected run but the same criteria that kept him in could help Alex out too.
Paddy Power actually have Alex Jones and Australian actress Holly Valance as joint 5/4 favourites to go this weekend, which is more as a result of Jones' One Show fanbase than her superior technique in the ballroom. For the punter the decision is a hard one. Holly Valance is without doubt still improving week on week, reflected in her full marks from the judges Tonioli, Revel Horwood, Dixon and Goodman and Alex is well behind the front runners, but as the BBC's Chris Hollins would testify he was definetly not the best dancer when he won the competition, so footwork is not the only measure of success
It is extremely unlikely that Alex could win however. Jason Donovan, Harry Judd and Chelsee Healey are so accomplished on the dancefloor and so personable too that they are not going to be sacrificed to promote Miss Jones. The British viewing public have to connect with the celebrities on these shows, they want to feel that they are being entertained and that somehow they are growing to know the performers. Holly Valance's only failing is that she is so laid back that the audience are not as involved with her challenge as they would like to be. Alex Jones on the other hand is able to refer to her dancing escapades every night on prime time television.
The punter's choice is clear. Will the viewers reward an accomplished antipodean or support the home grown bubbly establishment figure?
