Whilst enjoying the heady days of Summer, before even the kids have broken up for their holidays, it may seem very premature to cast our minds towards the BBC's premier sporting trophy in the Autumn, given what remains of the sporting calendar and the British players that are sitting in pole position for any of the remaining highspots, but bookmakers Paddy Power have clearly already had substantial interest in the prize and have an extensive BBC Sports Personality Of The Year market. Unsurprisingly the leader of the field is Rory McIlroy at short odds of 2/5.
Whilst the BBC trophy meticulously includes the word personality, this has always been a way of hiding a year of sporting drought, rather than a real pre-requisite for the winner. Last year's winner, champion jockey A P McCoy certainly was well overdue winning this gong, after his consistent record breaking feats on the race course, but with fewer accomplishments by British sportsmen in the more popular arenas, it was suddenly his time. Although he has made several appearances on Question Of Sport, I think few would argue (including the man himself) that his effervescent or personable character was his winning characteristic, especially when compared to the likes of Phil Tufnell, one of the captain's on the show, whose personality dominates the programme.
Having established that the word 'personality' is something of a red herring, why Rory McIlroy? The evidence is overwhelming. At 22, Rory not only won the US Open but was the youngest winner of the championships since 1923 and the youngest major winer since 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters. His record breaking statistics during the four day event make startling reading. He was the first player to go lower than -12 under par, the first to reach -17, the lowest 36 hole, 54 hole and 72 hole totals of 131, 199 and 268 respectively . These accomplishments certainly tee up Rory nicely to win the BBC's prize.
Lee Westwood appears at 25/1 favourite on the list, but how he could supercede McIlroy when he only tied third in the same competition is a mystery. There are of course other events to unfold this Summer, and whilst Jessica Ennis is understandably in second place, London 2012 hopefully will give her the chance to really triumph with a Gold Medal. The Olympics next year will definetly make this market a lot more complicated next year, it will be hard for any golfer to get a look in. Andy Murray foiled his chance of winning Sports Personality with his exit in Wimbledon's semifinals and whilst David Haye's achievements have been splendid , his recent World title fight loss does not set him up for this win. McIlroy looks a very hot favourite whose price is sure to shorten in the coming months.
