Although the Megalith of reality TV apparently came to an end last year, with more of a whimper than a bang, Channel 5 clearly believe that there is mileage in the old beast and have negotiated a reputed £200 million deal with producers Endemol to ensure its resurrection in the schedules later this summer.
Davina McCall and the BB logo became as one, with a tearful conclusion after the 'Ultimate Big Brother ' series last year and whilst at 12/1 in Paddy Power's 'Next Big Brother Presenter' market, it would be highly unlikely that she would return. Although the show definetly launched her career, she subsequently moved into a variety of presenting roles which now occupy her time. Big Brother's popularity was also waning in recent years avina and it became more career limiting than career enhancing for both Davina and Dermot O Leary.
O Leary went on to bigger things by presenting the X Factor, something every presenter craves on their CV, where one of his colleagues is also being mentioned as front person for the Channel 5 enterprise. Cheryl Cole's name is being moted as the possible host although there has been much denial from her camp. Of course her name would certainly make the re launch a definite success, but it is more likely that the marketing men are using the rumour factory to draw attention to their programme than actually expecting her to take the job.
The story uses the seeds of information that Cowell is not going to employ Cheryl on the American version of the X Factor to build the claims, but that would also apply to Dermot, for he too looks likely to loose out to an American for the presenting role. It seems a very unlikely career move for Cheryl, whose solo music career is growing and whose prowess has been in the pop industry, after all if the tables were turned and Simon Cowell replaced Louis Walsh with Davina McCall, the outrage would be voluble. Horses for courses and all that.
So if Endemol are unable to entice the hottest name on domestic Tv who do they choose to protect their investment? Big Brother as a brand is supposed to be modern, fun, cutting edge and light, so favourite Emma Willis at odds of 6/5 would certainly fit the bill. However historically Big Brother has rafts of loyal fans who pride themselves on train spotting knowledge of the various contestants and series' so employing one of the 'faithful'might just encourage those fans to make the move from Channel 4 to Channel 5. Brian Dowling would be just such a decision. He not only won one of the original series but by winning 'Ultimate Big Brother' last year proved himself to be the most popular contestant ever.
According to the gossip columns the show will return in August with a celebrity show with the names of Amy Childs, Peaches Geldof and Abbey Clancy being suggested as possible housemates. Now if Endemol managed to secure Cheryl Cole as a housemate Channel 5 would certainly have no concerns about their investment!!
