The Film Award season has now been ignited as the New Year dawns and headlining on the British news coverage are the hopes for Tom Hooper's film , 'The Kings Speech'. The Golden Globes are the first awards to test the temperature of the movie buffs and bookmaker Paddy Power certainly reflect the interest that the British movie is gathering in their Golden Globes 2011 Odds. Whilst the Social Network is slightly ahead in the betting, Colin Firth is clear favourite to lift the Best Dramatic Actor Globe at odds of 1/6.
'The King's Speech outlines the pressures on George VI as a monarch with a disabling stammer. Royal stories always go down well with a global audience as was evident when Helen Mirren starred in 'The Queen' and this unveiling of the King's personal struggles with his public role is drawing many plaudits from the critics. Firth's depiction of this intensely challenged man fascinates and absorbs the audience who sympathize with the rigours of a Royal role when strait jacketed by a very stiff 1940's society and a visible and audible disability.
Firth's closest competition unsurprisingly comes from James Franco at 6/1 for his depiction of Aron Ralston in '127 hours'. The ,at times uncomfortable but nevertheless compelling, tale of a climber who has to cut his own hand off to ensure his survival pivots around the performance of Franco which in itself is an enormous pressure for any actor and warrants his inclusion in any of the film awards this year, but it looks likely that Firth will supercede him in the honours on the back of the subtelty and restraint that he so exquisitely employs.
Neither Firth or Franco act in films which are favourite to win either the Best Director or Best Motion Picture Drama categories , which whilst rather intruiging is not unusual. 'The Social Network', a film outlining the inception and rise of the social networking site Facebook, is priced at 1/2 odds on favourite to win the Best Picture category and 1/4 for it's director David Fincher to win his too. The film has received many accolades since its release, but its success must have been affected by the now legendary numbers of Face Book members who were drawn to watch the incredible story and hence boosted its box office numbers. Of course a captive audience is not the only pre requisite for success, the film has to be well executed too, but as a piece of social history it will be unusual if it is not marked in some way by the Awards team.
