With Kate And Zara Back In the Spotlight The Bookies Open New Markets

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge may be well into their married life but that does not mean that interest in them is diminishing, in fact the spotlight on the couple is focused and ready to capture any news worthy story. News worthy of course has many interpretations, when the selling of newspapers is at stake, but Kate Windsor nee Middleton is courting enormous interest for her role as a clothes horse whenever she appears in public, as happened again at the weekend when she attended her husband's cousin's wedding in Edinburgh. Princess Anne's daughter Zara Phillips married her long term partner Mike Tindall in a much more modest ceremony than the Westminster Abbey bash and whilst the bride was certainly of interest, Kate was again courted by the press. Paddy Power are clearly aware of the young royals marketability and have maintained books since the big Royal Wedding in May.

Zara and Mike will of course be a source of interest for the media, especially because both garnered attention for their sporting achievements before they were married, but the focus is slightly different. In their 'First To Have a Baby' market Kate is just favourite at 4/5 over Zara at 11/10 but in Paddy Power's Royal Baby Specials book all of the possibilities favour Mr and Mrs Tindall.

The novelty betting market often requires the punter to step away from an early result and this 'Royal Baby Specials' book is a real example of this. Zara Phillips is an International Equestrian, her husband an ex International Rugby player and the former has also won the BBC's Sports Personality Of The Year Award, with a famously appalling acceptance speech. However, with this sort of breeding stock Paddy Power's bet that their child will compete as an Olympic equestrian, an International rugby player or win 'SPOTY 'is entirely understandable, but given that a child has not yet been born would require at least 18 years of patience before the bet could be cashed in.

Whilst this does seem like a ridiculously long time to wait, after all 18 years in the modern world could mean that there wouldn't even be an Olympics,the game of rugby or even a world as we know it, citizens have been snaffling away funds in pension plans which came to nothing, so from that perspective it is not so foolish. A few quid on any of the 'Baby Special' options now, could return a pleasant bonus in year's to come. It might even pay for a ticket to a game of rugby in 2030 given the nature of inflation!
