So Much Value in Eurovision Double Digit Entries

In Part Two of his Eurovision Song Contest preview (Read Part One Here), @RoyTheBoyF1 reckons there is value to be had with backing Spain, Australia and France this year.

Whilst we have not ruled out victory for Russia or Sweden in the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, it is undeniable that they represent diabolical value at 7/4 and 7/1 and punters must look elsewhere for a possible winner.

Two of the oldest chestnuts in Eurovision betting is following the countries fielding both the gay and novelty acts. Alas there is no Conchita Wurst (the bearded Austrian lady who prevailed in 2014) or Lordi (the 2006 costume rock winner from Finland) type acts in this year’s line-up.

So a conventional listen and watch of all countries songs has to be the starting point. Youtube has videos of all the acts that will represent their country online. But, for those of you that may find the prospect of listening to 43 three-minute tunes (of varying degrees of puke worthiness) enough to make you contemplate suicide, we have done the hard work for you.

Italy, top priced 40/1 with Bet 365, are of immediate interest given their song, ‘No Degree of Separation’, performed by a solo woman singer, has breached 11 million views on Youtube.

However her tune, a hybrid of an opera and a Julio Iglesias song, is sung in Italian from start to finish. If the genre of music doesn’t alienate enough potential voters to see it fail, the choice of language most certainly will.

Croatia’s singer has a quirky Bjork type image and she has chosen to sing about a Lighthouse of all things. Lacking a defined chorus and probably better suited to supporting a Gaelic themed Guinness TV commercial, it is priced between 12/1 and 33’s (at Betfair). Betfair are good judges!

Spain has been supported at 33’s in recent days albeit some ‘double carpet’ is still left at Boylesports. Another tune performed by a female singer (called Barei), this one will go down well enough with the younger generation as it has a bit of ‘Adele’ going on with some clubbing undertones. It looks sure-fire top-ten material.

Meanwhile Armenia’s (25/1 PaddyPower) contestant, yet another female, has a great voice but her Kate Bush style went out of fashion some time ago and it is hard to place her song in car radios, and radio airtime is something all recent winners have been deserved of.

Serbia’s Sanja Vucic Zaa (a woman, you guessed it) has a Shirley Bassey crossed with Adele type song that could go down well with the musical experts but her Egyptian looks and a belly dancer type routine is unlikely to gain mass public votes. All-in-all though, it is another worthy of a top-ten finish.

Malta, top-priced 16/1, have come up with their best effort in years but their highly produced song (performed by a woman again) falls flat in the lyric department with a repetitive “I can’t get enough of your love, I feel like I can walk on water” line which is coma inducing.

At an identical 16/1 is the Ukrainian entrant. It is mystifying as to why this song (OMG woman alert) is so short in the betting (16/1 Ladbrokes). It is hard to decipher what language she sings in – there is some English in it – but for the most part she sounds like she is being tortured.

Australia (12/1 Ladbrokes) are making their second appearance at the contest, are surely going to finish in the top-four. After all they finished fifth last year with a very ordinary entry.

Their Korean female solo artist (yes, you read correct), Kam Im, won Australia’s X-Factor in 2013 and she has the voice of an angel. Possessing a great stage presence her song is simple and features an all-important memorable sing-along chorus. This is the stuff of Top-3, if not better.

But all will have to go some to outscore France who have a massive weapon in the shape of a male performer! OK, they have a strong song too, a clever number which opens in French but transforms itself into a catchy sing-along tune with its choruses in English. The judges should view it favourably.

France is certainly far more popular now than it’s been for a few years and if that is reflected by Europe wide public votes they could easily win this competition for a sixth time.
