Britain's Got Talent Odds: Janey Cutler Wins Hearts And Minds

Last night's semi final of Britain's Got Talent saw 83 year old Janey Cutler win the hearts and minds of the nation with a set of lungs that would have made a twenty year old proud and secure her place in the final!  Even though at times she fell a bar or two behind the backing track the audience 's enthusiasm reflected the sentimentality that can overwhelm these competitions.  Surrounded by the youthful energy of Twist and Pulse, the other act to get through to the final and dance group The Fusion Janey , dressed in red on the arm of two dinner jacketed young men, was Glasgow's answer to Shirley Bassey, albeit in the rough.

Although there is one more semi final tonight bookmakers Paddy Power still agree that gynmastic troop Spellbound are still spellbinding and at 8/11 are still favourites to win.  Last year whilst Susan Boyle rocked the nation and the judging panel of Simon Cowell, Amanda Burton and Piers Morgan and caused an international storm, she still didn't win her place at the Royal Variety Show and history is likely to repeat itself on Saturday night.

Working in Janey's favour is the fact that, whilst her voice may not be as good as Susan's she has a warmth, humour and presence that is compelling and endearing although ultimately British audiences are more likely to reward the discipline and energy of the country's youth.  The only other real contender in this competition is Paul Burling whose impersonations have been professional  and observed  clear rules of comic timing.

The question that the judges always pose during their critiques is, "Would The Queen Enjoy This Act?".  There is little doubt that the gymnasts would show British youth at its best, but maybe a duet with Janey could herald just the sort of National fervour required before a World Cup Campaign.
