Having just enjoyed the pomp circumstance and pageantry of The Royal Wedding, the country is about to be treated to another celebration of pageantry and camp, Eurovision 2011 is to be held in Dusseldorf, Germany a week Saturday. Having failed to secure success since Katrina and the Waves regardless of the input of establishment figures like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Pete Waterman, bookmakers Paddy Power have the Uk second favourites to win behind France.
Lloyd Webber and Waterman were drafted in to add gravitas to the UK's entries in 2009 and 2010 respectively and whilst Webber did show some progress from the year before Waterman's ship was well and truly sunk as it travelled across the channel. Both men were given unknown artists to work with chosen by the public on a TV show, but this years entry sees a return to well known faces to carry the nation's hopes.
Inappropriately named 'boy ' band Blue have reformed for the purpose of carrying the country's mantle and the rumours across Europe is that they are finding favour. Whilst not in the same league as Take That , Blue certainly had a fanbase which is enthused by them getting back together. The group will certainly benefit from achieiving success at the competition for it would act as a pleasant launch pad for a second bite of the pop cherry and as well seasoned performers they would not be daunted by the arena. If they fail, but respectably, they would still have garnered enough publicity across Europe to make it worthwhile.
So far their song,'I Can', an anthemic number written by the group themselves has been well received in the pre competition PR expeditions, reflected in the price that Paddy Power is quoting. Alarmingly the leaders by some margin at the moment is France, so let's hope this time in true Eurovision tradition, Waterloo is not the winning song but won by the Brits as history dictated.
