As the last reality TV show ends so another begins. Dancing On Ice slides off into the sunset wishing it was Strictly Come Dancing or The X Factor and the poor relation of the Winter Spring schedules creeps onto the BBC. The second series of 'So You Think You Can Dance', ( is it really necessary for these programmes to have ever lengthier titles?) supplying a strange career sojourn for judges Nigel Lythgoe, Louise Rednapp, Sisco and the ever youthful Arlene Phillips ( who found sanctuary with this format having lost her place on 'Strictly Come Dancing') comes to our screens.
From the outtset SYTYCD promised everything that Strictly could not deliver, youth, enthusiasm, raw talent and modernity, but whether it is the format or the presenters that leave it flailing is unclear. The first three programmes , of which Saturday's offering was number two, are recordingsof the audition shows. Whilst the audition stage of the X Factor meets as much enthusiasm from the audience as the main event, with its hilarious array of misguided and misdirected egos, SYTYCD had a couple of uncomfortable auditions but generally loses its magnetism from an early stage.
Whilst the show has certainly gained momentum from the early days reflected in the market offered by bookmakers Paddy Power, there is a lack of magnetism on the panel and a lack of fireworks as a result. The viewer does not care nearly as much about what Lythgoe, Louise or Sisco have to say as Cowell or Len Goodman so the whole point of the show ,ie to impress the panel is swept out to sea.
Paddy Power are offering just a single 'outright market' at the moment, much in the same way as they do with the X Factor in the early stages, so be aware that those listed may not even reach the final stages of the competition. Choreography Camp will separate the wheat from the chaff much in the same way as the judges' houses section does on X Factor and whilst some judgement can be made from this earlier coverage, the producers will certainly not want to give the whole game away so soon. Clearly the prices are longer than would normally be expected for just this reason and a keen choreographer's eye might just be useful in securing a reasonably lucrative flutter.
Matt Flint, Stephanie Powell and Ryan Jenkins are leading the field at the moment at 6/1, based on personality, skill and looks, but given that each contestant has to compete in a range of disciplines with which they may not be familar and with partners they do not know, it may be wiser to wait until at least the actual line up is revealed.
