As the Oscar nominations emerge from Hollywood this week, the most interesting competition that is catching the eye of movie fans and pundits is for The Best Director prize. Whilst Best Film has always been seen as the most coveted Oscar with Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron competing in the same category public interest is keen.
Cameron who is director of the blockbuster Avatar, reputed to have cost £250 million dollars and is receiving plaudits for its technical innovation is up against Kathryn Bigelow, director of The Hurt Locker, an independent film made for £6million outside the powerful studio system and tells a gritty story of a bomb disposal team in Iraq. Clearly the two subjects and budgets are worlds apart but the same cannot be said for the contenders.
David or Goliath? Enjoy A Free £50 Bet With Paddy Power
Bigelow and Cameron were married divorcing in 1991, which adds a lot of intrigue to the proceedings. His film has already grossed more than any other in Hollywood history, whilst The Hurt Locker has taken only £9million at the box office. Will Hollywood go with David or Goliath? Is its future with good old fashioned storytelling or with computer generated wizadry?
The interest in this particular bet goes one step further and its a big step. A woman has never won the Best Director Oscar which has always been a bone of contention with Academy Critics. It may well seem opportune to award Bigelow this award for what is recognized as a compelling film to redress the balance of technology over performance and recognize the contribution of women within the film industry.
Surely this is David/Kathryn's time?
