The two juggernauts of reality Tv are now up to speed on the fast lane of Saturday night viewing. As combative as ever for the public's attention both Strictly Come Dancing and The X Factor offer the reality TV fan lots of opportunities, as well as the bookmakers. Given that this is the season for reality Tv production it often seems incredulous that there is room for one more on this busy highway, but there is. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here is due to kick off in the next few days and it too will draw enormous interest.
Airing nightly, I'm A Celebrity ... will usher in another feast of bug eating, claustrophobic cave and water challenges as well as the odd vertiginous escapade. Of all the programmes that a celebrity could choose this is probably the most demanding , with little space for egos to hide. For this reason, it can still draw viewers in huge numbers, regardless of the weekend feast of Strictly and X Factor.
Bookmakers Paddy Power have already jumped on the bandwagon by offering an Overall Winners' market even though the line up of the show has yet to be confirmed. This happens every year and whilst some of the actual contenders do appear on the list there are numerous red herrings which red top speculation have brought to the surface. the process is of course part of the media machine and publicity hype and a punt at this time does have enormous risks attatched to it.
Iwan Thomas is at present favourite on the leaderboard at odds of 5/1. At such significantly short odds the rumour factory must have convinced Paddy Power enough that the Olympic athlete will appear and as a likeable and physically robust character that he would do well in the Australian outback. Of the others that appear on the list there are a selection of quite likely and very unlikely candidates. Actress Linda Robson, of Birds Of A Feather fame, could easily add a no nonsense matronly vibe to the entourage as many have done in the past and Alex Reid would surely love to stay in the public eye and show he was as capable as famous jungle participants Peter Andre and Katie Price. Dannii Minogue's appearance would be a real coup, but extremely unlikely as would Ryan Giggs. Once again another famous footballer appears on the list and has done for the last two years. Paul Gascoigne could really do with some public support after the rocky road he has traversed in the public eye and 16/1 says he might try it.
The Paddy Power list announces the birth of another jungle fest, but caution is the watch word here, unless there are real indicators in the press or interviews that a Celebrity is off to Australia, it is pure speculation.
