One of the best kept secrets in TV has been the identity of the racing driver on BBC's show Top Gear, who competes in disguise with celebrities on the programme. It has been an incredible feat in this day and age of investigative journalistic probing that the myth remained intact for seven long years, and it has taken a court appearance by Ben Collins and a court injunction by the BBC to prevent an autobiography being published, for the truth to be unveiled. Top Gear's Stig has been revealed as Collins, an accomplished racing driver, and unsurprisingly bookmakers Paddy Power are offering a variety of betting markets on his future.
Wearing a white suit and blacked out visor, the Stig was such an integral part of the motoring show that the BBC was prepared to risk the £100,000 costs for the legal proceedings that they will now have to stump up. Top Gear has been one of the BBC's most lucrative exports however, broadcasting across the globe so it is understandable that they should choose to retain the mystery of 'The Man In The White Suit' as the autobiography is titled.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May who present the show, reputed for their 'Men Behaving Badly ' antics will surely be crushed by the revelation about the Stig and will question if it is at all possible to recreate this personna in their next series. With the acrimony beween employee and employer it is hard to believe that the Stig will find it easy to remain as part of the line up, so it is quite appropriate that Paddy Power is offering one particular market on how the Stig's departure will be depicted.
Given the irreverent humour embodied by the presenters and their comic book formats on many of their outside broadcasts, it is understandable that Odds of 6/4 say the Stig will be seen driving off a cliff. It is still possible however, that Collins' actual credentials may see the BBC having to eat humble pie and request him to return to the fold. Starring at Le Mans this year, where he was the fastest night time driver, Collins again proved he is a worthy opponent for any Top Gear guest and it could be inappropriate to use anyone else when there has been so much history attached to him!
