We may only be two months in to the new sporting calendar but already, several leading British Sportsmen and women have staked their claim for winning the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the year award for 2010. Bookmakers have had to amended their odds on several occasions since the turn of the year on which sports star will walk away with the award in December and with a host of top class sporting events still to come over the next nine months, they will be sure to to be have to alter the odds on several more occasions for this extremely popular year long betting market.
The latest addition to the 2010 Spors Personanality betting is British Athlete, Amy Williams, who recently won Gold in the Skeleton at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. In doing so, she became the first British individual Gold medal winner at the Winter Olypmics in over 30 years. Bookmakers reacted by installing the 27 year old as a 16/1 chance of winning the award having previously been unlisted. Whilst unlikely to win the award she can take great pride in residing alongside names such as Lewis Hamilton, Wayne Rooney and Andy Murray.

It is Andy Murray who currently sits top of the betting as the 7/2 favourite to win the 2010 SPOTY award after he reached the final of the Australian Open in January. That was probably not enough to win the award but with three more Majors to come, a victory in Paris, New York or at Wimbledon would surely be enough for the Scot to be the first tennis player to walk away with the award since Greg Rusedski in 1997.
Like Andy Murray, Ian Poulter is another sportsman who has got off to a flying start in 2010, winning the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in February, the single biggest tournament win of his career to date. Poulter has gone on record as saying he hopes to repeat that level of performance in this year's Golf Majors and if he does, the 80/1 still available with Boylesports about the SPOTY could be an excellent each way bet and make no mistakes about it, you only need to take one look at his wardrobe to realise Poulter certainly fits the 'personality' part of the award. Paddy Power clearly aren't taking any risks and have cut his odds to 25/1.
In the last two years, F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have both finsihed place second in the Sports Personality of the year having been both been hot favourites and once again, both are well fancied in 2010. However, with both men driving for the same team this year (McLaren Mercedes) it could well be an intriguing duel on and off the track with Hamilton the favoured of the two to win Sports Personality at odds of 10/1 with Button a 16/1 chance.
Only four footballers have won the award in the past twenty years and two of those have been in World Cup years. With England heading to South Africa for this summer's tournament with big things expected of them. Wayne Rooney is the one member of the England squad who sits at the top of the current SPOTY betting andif any single facotr going to help England succeed at the World Cup then it is the goals of Rooney. The Man Utd striker is currently 9/2 to win the award and his personal achievements alone this year if he wins the Premier League top scorer and adds the title and maybe Champions League to his medal haul may be enough to see him win it.
