Yesterday the Mecca of Film and Entertainment unveiled the nominations for this years Oscars. The acceptance sppeeches are being written, the designers summoned, the beauticians overwhelmed, the hairdressers standing at the ready and acting lessons on false smiles over subscribed. As predicted after The Golden Globes it appears that Avatar is assumed to take The Best Picture Award, with it's revolutionary 3D technology being heralded as the biggest breakthrough since Movies branched into Talkies. Already breaking all Box Office records as the highest grossing movie of all time, the accolade will only encourage more to view it.
Given the computer enhanced technology involved with Avatar it is no surprise that The Best Actor and Best Actress Awards do not feature any performances given in this film. However it does highlight the issue of what constitutes a great film if there are no great acting roles in it! This may prove to be the underlying difference in criteria between The Oscars and The Baftas, the latter who tend to be more purist in their assessment of a film's success. Those having a punt on The Oscars should approach The Baftas in a completely different way. The Brits like a great acting performance.

Jeff Bridges is leading the pack for Best Actor with his performance in Crazy Heart, with George Clooney a distant second. Clearly The Academy are not filled with libidinous women! Morgan Freeman at the moment is in third place with his role as Nelson Mandela in Invictus. Whilst receiving critical acclaim it is always dangerous to play a legend, let alone a living legend so it seems unlikely he will overtake Bridges.
Sandra Bullock is in front of veteran Oscar winner Meryl Streep for her convincing performance in The Blind Side, but it seems a shame that home grown Carey Mulligan will have to stand aside for Hollywood Royalty. Mulligan may well find her role in An Education being rewarded at The Baftas. Nepotism on both sides of the Atlantic? Surely Not!
For those who are more excited by the glamour of the event there are bets available on The Designer Of The Winning Actress's dress and the colour. Whilst Lanvin and Oscar de La Renta are options, an informed punt on this bet would require a lot of inside knowledge. The favourite colour for the dress to be worn by the winner is Black. How reassuring that in the multi million dollar world of Hollywood, those gracing the top of the tree are as reliant on a little Black Number as the rest of women in the Western world.
