Emmy 2011 Odds: Downton Abbey and Kate Winslet Lead British Challenge

In the quiet of the summer, the candidates are lining up for Americas premier TV awards in the form of the Emmys and with the UK's reputation for period drama, it is unsurprising to find two of its exponents sitting at the top of the table. ‘Downton Abbey’, which met such an enthusiastic reception on these shores, has travelled well across the pond and its main rival in the Paddy Power Emmy 2011 market is a showcase for the talent of another premier British period actress. Kate Winslet takes the lead role in the mini series ‘Mildred Pierce’.

The Americans have always appreciated a bit of UK costume drama, the multiple Oscar winning King's Speech being one of many examples, so it is no surprise that the episodic ‘Downton Abbey’ became as addictive in The States as it was to the millions in the UK and is second favourite at 5/2 to win the 'Outstanding Mini Series/TV Movie' Emmy.

‘Mildred Pierce’ is a five part reworking of the1945 film made famous by Joan Crawford. At the time the storyline of a woman's struggles to cope with a philandering husband, a divorce and the demands of a precocious daughter as a single parent was unheard of requiring the power of Crawford’s delivery to set it in the halls of movie loadstones. The casting of Kate Winslet is pure genius and with the talented Guy Pearce in the male lead has made the remaking of this classic a real triumph, meeting with critical acclaim from all the major voices. At the moment this mini series has inched ahead of Downton Abbey at Odds of 2/7 to win the category.

With a US based storyline, built around a US Film Noir Classic, it is unlikely that the Downton Abbey import will triumph, which in any other year would have simply been a case of rubber stamping. However, it is not simply a case of nepotism, there can not be a more essentially American tale than that of The Kennedys, but the mini series of the same name, which has recently been shown on British TV screens, whilst on the Emmy list found little support with US viewers and sits at an unimpressive 33/1 to win
