Britain's Got Talent aired its third audition programme on Saturday and like the other two shows, there were many dire exponents of Britain's talent, many of whom were put through to the next round on the back of the judges' sympathy but there was one young man who not only stole the stage but could well take the ultimate prize. Each week the producers ensure that there is at least one act to catch the public's attention, there was singer Michael Collings in week one and Edward Reid in week two, but the singing voice of Ronan Parke swiftly overtook both and propelled him to the top of the leader board in online bookmaker Paddy Power's outright winner market.
Michael Collings voice was certainly a surprise coming from a rather lardy messy form and Reid was certainly more slick and had the added benefit of humour, but so far the audience has not all got to their feet and seemed so moved. Even the judges, who this week included Louis Walsh standing in for David Hasselhoff found themselves joining in the standing ovation for the minor..
Comparisons are already being made in the media to music phenomenon Justin Bieber. Ronan is only twelve , younger even than Bieber, but is undoubtedly cute, well groomed and vocally adept and in interviews he has given he has paid homage to his heroines Rihanna and Beyonce, so the boy has clearly understood what it takes to be a crowd pleasure.
Youth, cuteness, ability and politeness and indeed shyness is hard for anyone to beat. Certainly the producers will have other surprises up their sleeves to maintain interest and to ensure that the competition is not a one horse race, but it is easy to draw comparisons with the effect Susan Boyle had on the audience when she auditioned. Of course the extraordinary thing is that Boyle did not win, although she had international recognition, and it could well be that the pressure she succumbed to could apply to young Ronan. His audition on Saturday came with no expectations, the bar is now raised and he will be expected to clear it, a 12 year old may not have the resources to mantain calm in the circumstances, but on the performance he gave this weekend, he is certainly the best so far.
