Having seen countless popstar wannabe auditions paraded on the X Factor and Britains Got Talent, watching the talented and less than able singers in their desperate search for fame and fortune, it is novel to see those who have had a successful career in the pop industry risk making complete fools of themselves on Popstar To Operastar.
The format had seemed like a recipe for disaster, with housewives favourite Alan Titmarsh at the helm and Meatloaf and Laurence Llewellyn Bowen as judges, it appeared that this might be a one off series that ITV would be keen to swiftly retire to the archives.
The critics are more flamboyant than informative but gravitas is leant to the proceedings with mentors, Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon whose discipline and passion for their subject is compelling and infectious.
Their enthusiasm has certainly rubbed off on the contestants who may well have entered the competition to raise their flagging profiles and accept a handy cheque at the same time, but who seem to have truly entered into the Covent Garden Spirit.

Visibly apprehensive on the first show, the nerves effected performances across the board but with considerable hard work, as shown on the coaching footage, the Popstars are finding voices that neither they or the public ever thought was possible.
Marcella Detroit was impressive at the outset but now is clearly pulling away from her nearest rival Bernie Nolan. Her commanding voice in Shakespeare's Sister has found a new home in a range of Arias that have not only technical prowess but emotional force. In fact the women have all done well. No one would have thought that Kym Marsh from the unremarkable Hear Say would have found quite such a resonant voice.
The male contestants have not fared as well with only Darius, he of X factor fame and Danny Jones of McFly remaining. Danny led the Odds Table for a while but his young female fanbase seem to have abandoned him of late and he looks most likely to leave next.
Whilst those teenage texters may not have been compelled to stay with Danny or the programme, the experience has been refreshing Television. Seeing Celebrities not only attempting to learn a new skill but embracing and meeting a difficult challenge in the face of fragile egos has been good to watch. Only Laurence and Meatloaf and Alan need to be retired.
With a whole variety of Betting Options there is a good chance of improving the whole experience with a little flutter
