As Parliaments across Europe take a breather from their economic gymnastics and high defence budgets, the rest of the world is considering who will be this year’s winner of The Nobel Peace Prize. It will always be a contentious winner because by its very nature the nominee or nominees will be flying in the face of war or the tide of one tribe’s opinion. Whilst there are many Nobel prizes this is the one that always receives more publicity and sets up the winner for column yards across the world’s press. Bookmakers Paddy Power have of course got a book on the subject and Afghani Sima Samar tops the odds at 5/4 on.
Afghanistan has had a chequered and well publicized history, the subject of endless wars over the past century, and now that Europe and America have troops deployed in the region and economic chaos domestically, any figure who is contributing to the peace will be showered with support. This does not mean that Samar does not deserve the prize, she has certainly put her personal safety in frequent danger to speak out for the plight of her fellow Afghanis.
Training as a doctor in her native Kabul, it was in 1984 that the then Communist regime forced her to flee first to the more remote area of Jaghoori, where she helped the poor and sick and then to Pakistan where she became a hinge pin in treating afghani refugees set tingup The Shuhada Clinic in Quetta. Her focus was the treatment of women and girls and such became her reputation that she returned to Afghanistan in 2002 to join the Afghan Transitional Administration under Hamid Karzai.
Her political journey was then interrupted as death threats, from conservative Islamic groups who abhorred her denouncement of purdah and sharia law, as she continued to highlight the plight of women in Afghani society, led to her resignation. An advert was even taken out in domestic papers comparing her to ‘the infidel of the west’, Salman Rushdie. She now heads the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) where she continues to vigourously challenge the philosophies of the mujahideen and the Taliban.
Inevitably The Nobel Peace Prize will triumph those who, with no thought for their own safety, highlight the plight of those whose human rights are being undermined and whilst Burma’s Aung San Su Kyi at 4/1, possesses all these qualities, the global spotlight on Afghanistan will undoubtedly mean the West will want to show moral support for someone who is clearly representing their views in her endeavours.
