The finalists for the first competition for The UK City Of Culture competition for 2013 have been announced and Birmingham, Derry, Norwich and Sheffield are now set to battle it out.  Over the next three months the civil servants and local government officers in these particular locations will be pulling out all the stops to hone a programme of cultural activities to ensure a win.

This competition will now be a regular four yearly event and the winner will benefit by hosting The Brits, The Turner Prize,Sports Personality Of The Year and The Stirling Architecture prize.  Clearly the city that suceeds will benefit on an employment front from the extra revenue and jobs created but balancing that against the expenditure required to create a broad programme will be difficult.  Clearly bookmakers Paddy Power see this competition as an edgy one with Birmingham and Derry almost neck and neck at the moment.
