The UK Championship is the second biggest ranking tournament of the year, after the World Championship. It has been held at a variety of venues since it was established in 1977, including Bournemouth, Preston and York. It is currently held at the York Barbican Centre in December.
The huge ranking points on offer and a prize fund of £625,000 ensure the best players from the world of snooker are always in attendance. It makes for great betting for the snooker punter as so often the odds on favourite is dumped out at an early stage, as was proven in 2010 when tournament favourite Ronnie O'Sullivan was dumped out in the first round by Stuart Bingham.
Many great names have won the tournament in the past including Ronnie O'Sullivan, Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry. There have also been some sensational finals, not least Ding Junhui's 10-8 win over John Higgins in 2009. And it is always televised on terrestrial tv which provides the punter with the chance to keep up to date with each match and player form.
The 2010 tournament was won by John Higgins as he defeated Mark Williams in a thrilling final. Higgins won 10-9 after trailing 6-2 and 9-7, and it was a sensational return to the sport for a man who was suspended for failing to report a match fixing approach.
