Judd can Trump the Crucible field at the World Snooker Championship

The World Snooker Championship gets underway at the prestigious Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Saturday and Ronnie O'Sullivan heads into the two-week event as a short priced favourite. The market leader was stunned by eventual champion Stuart Bingham in the quarter-finals of this tournament last year and he could yet be worth opposing at the prices this time around...

  • Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the World Championship 5 times
  • Barry Hawkins has reached the semi-finals in his last 3 appearances at The Crucible
  • Stuart Bingham is defending champion

Ronnie Heads The Betting

'The Rocket' can be backed at 19/10 (Unibet) as he bids to add to the Masters and Welsh Open crowns he has claimed this season and he is obviously a worthy favourite. He has reached at least the semi-finals in 11 of his 23 appearances at The Crucible, winning five times and finishing runner-up once, but he is in a tricky third section of the draw this year.

O'Sullivan is pencilled in to meet Barry Hawkins (50/1) in the second round and Hawkins has a fine pedigree at The Crucible having reached the semi-finals in each of his last three visits to Sheffield. Hawkins has only won one of eleven meetings with the Rocket though and that came in their first ever clash at the Scottish Open in 2002, with O'Sullivan winning their subsequent ten meetings, including a 10-1 demolition job in the Masters final earlier this year.

O'Sullivan could then meet Shaun Murphy (12/1) in the third round and that won't be an easy task as Murphy was a beaten finalist here twelve months ago.

The Bottom Half Of The Draw

The bottom-half of the draw also includes Mark Selby, who recently withdrew from the Players Championship and China Open for personal reasons. If the time away has benefitted him then he could represent value in the fourth quarter as he should have enough to get past the seeded Mark Allen, Joe Perry and Michael White.

Selby won the 2014 Crucible title when he defeated O'Sullivan in the final and is sure to attract interest at 10/1 (Unibet), albeit he respresents something of a punt as we can't be sure what shape his game is in going into this event.

The Top-Half Of The Draw

Defending champion Stuart Bingham (33/1) is in the top-half of the draw but we do fancy he looks vulnerable with Stephen Maguire, John Higgins and Ricky Walden in his section. Walden (50/1 with Paddy Power) is an intriguing proposition as he has recently finished runner-up at the Players Championship and China Open, where he beat Bingham 5-1 in the quarter-finals, and he could yet build on his semi-final appearance from the 2013 World Championship.

The second quarter features 2010 winner Neil Robertson (6/1) and the 2011 runner-up Judd Trump, with the pair pencilled to meet in the last-eight. Trump currently leads the head-to-head meetings with Robertson 13-12 and the China Open champion has tended to come out on top in the big matches with Robertson recently, as evidenced by victories over him in the Australian Open final and the quarter-finals of the Masters in recent years.

Trump is 7/1 to win the title (Betfred) and he could yet sign off a very decent year with a maiden World Championship victory.
