New Zealand start as massive favourites for their opening Tri Nations clash with an under strength South Africa on Saturday. The All Blacks are 1/25 on to get off to a winning start at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington, with South Africa 9/1 against and the draw 25/1 in the betting with Stan James.
Graham Henry's side have won five of the past six Tri Nations tournaments and for many it is a question of how many they win by rather than if they will win. They are unbeaten in seven matches in the tournament since 2009 and it is difficult to see this second string South African side causing too many problems.
The Springboks are without 21 players as all eyes focus on the upcoming World Cup in the autumn and they have been much criticised for their decision to leave players back home. They lost their opening match 39-20 to Australia in the opening match of the tournament last weekend and things could get worse on Saturday as New Zealand warmed up for the tournament with a thumping 60-14 defeat of Fiji.
New Zealand too are slightly under strength as players are rested after a tough Super Rugby season, but they do welcome back Cory Jane and Sam Whitelock. The prolific Jane is a massive plus and he looks very tempting in the first tryscorer betting where he is available at an industry best price of 8/1.
Furthermore, Dan Carter returns to the side and the fly half can overtake Johnny Wilkinson's test points record of 1195 by scoring a penalty on Saturday. With that in mind it could be worth a look at the first scoring play being a New Zealand penalty this weekend at a best priced 15/8 with StanJames.com.
Henry has warned his side to be wary of a South African backlash, although his side can draw confidence from the fact they have won the last three meetings with the Springboks, including a 29-22 win when the sides last met in Johannesburg last year. Only two South African players remain from that side and the reserves face a huge task.
Peter De Villiers' men will more than likely use their physical approach to keep the All Blacks at bay, but with such a gulf in class between the respective teams this weekend it could be a big winning margin for New Zealand.
The New Zealand win by 13 points or more is 2/5 on and for a bit more value it could be worth a look at New Zealand to win by 21-25 points at 6/1. It is remarkable to think that such a huge margin between the number one and three ranked sides in the world is being talked about and with so little value in the outright match betting it could be worth a look at the handicaps.
New Zealand are 10/11 to win with a handicap of -18 points and that is decent value as they bid to continue their recent domination of the Tri Nations.
