Wales v Namibia Odds: Landslide Win for the Welsh Expected in RWC Pool D

With plenty of pundits suggesting that the organisers might need a cricket score board for this Wales v Namibia Pool D match in New Plymouth in the 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) on Monday morning, it goes without saying that the odds weigh heavily in the favour of a Welsh win. Currently Wales have ridiculous odds of 1/750 available from Ladbrokes to win the match, while Namibia have been given no chance with odds of 40/1.

Welsh coach Warren Gatland of course will not be too concerned about any threat the Namibians pose, but by the amount of points his team can score against them. With bonus points being more important in this Pool than any other, Gatland will know that his team must gain the maximum which means that they must score at least four tries and hope that it is enough to at least level the situation in the Pool with Samoa, who sit 5 points ahead of them after their emphatic win over Fiji on Sunday.

Typically these Pool games have attracted the conspiracy theorists and this particular lobby of cynics are strongly suggesting that the South African’s would prefer to finish as pool runners up, as it would give them a potentially easier passage through to the final. The likelihood in real terms is that if they finish on top of Pool D, they will face Australia in the Quarter finals, a team that they have lost to in both of their recent Tri Nations meetings. If the cynics are correct then Samoa after their victory over Fiji will also defeat the South African’s in their final Pool D game on September 30th, thus finishing on top of the Pool table with the Springboks qualifying in second place and Wales no matter what, finishing in third.

The outcomes of those matches are of course completely out of the hands of Wales, who can do more than rout Namibia in similar fashion to the 87-0 victory the Springboks earned against them and then avenge their 2007 RWC exit be defeating Fiji in the final Pool D match in October 2nd. Should this happen then in all probability Wales will line up in the last eight against Ireland in wet and windy Dunedin for a place in the semi final for which Wales have odds from ladbrokesof 11/8 to achieve while Ireland are 4/5 odds on courtesy of the same Bookmaker.

Wales will be fielding a much changed but not necessarily weaker team against Namibia, that will see the return of the ever reliable Stephen Jones at Fly Half making his record breaking 101st appearance for his country, while former captain Ryan Jones who has recovered from injury will return to the team as blindside flanker. Lee Byrne has been named at full back to replace the injured James Hook, while the much missed Gethin Jenkins makes his comeback in the front row. Alex Brew gets a chance on the left wing, replacing Wales top try scorer Shane Williams, who has a slight calf strain. Brew’s inclusion could not possibly be more timely as he could easily end up scoring a hatful of tries. Indeed Ladbrokes Bookmakers make him and his fellow winger, Leigh Halfpenny 11/2 favourites to score the first try of the match.

Handicap punters might well fancy their chances in this game who will note that Wales are on offer at 10/11 odds on about winning by - 57.0, while Namibia are the same odds 10/11 for + 57.0.

With Wales looking to go all out in this match, it is almost certain that their first scoring play will come via a try, which can be backed with odds of 4/5 and they are worth considering too to win by a winning margin of between 51-60 points, which carries odds of 5/2.
