After last weekend's historic victory over Australia, Ireland look to face a much easier task on Sunday when they take on World Cup minnows Russia in Rotorua. The Irish are a massive 1/500 on to win the Pool C match, while Russia are 33/1 to pull off a stunning upset in the betting with Ladbrokes bookmakers.
Ireland can all but make certain of qualification for the knockout stages with a big win over the Russians and their only previous meeting was a rout. The two sides met in a World Cup qualifier in 2002 and Ireland romped to a 35-3 victory, with Ronan O'Gara notching 15 points.
O'Gara has had to play down retirement talk during the last week, but it is his teammate Andrew Trimble who heads the first try scorer betting this weekend. The Ulster wing is priced 13/2 by Ladbrokes and that could be worth a look.
It looks to be case of how many points Ireland rack up on Sunday and their record score in a World Cup match was 64-7 against Namibia. They will more than likely be without the injured Paul O'Connell, Gordon D'Arcy and Tommy Bowe this weekend but the whole squad will be buzzing after last weekend's heroics.
They produced their greatest defensive performance in a World Cup match as they overcame the highly fancied Australians 15-6 at Eden Park. A narrow scoreline doesn't look very likely in Rotorua though and Ireland can be backed to win by a margin of 41-50 points at 11/4 in the betting with Ladbrokes.com.
Russia are making their first appearance in a World Cup competition and it started with a promising, if ultimately disappointing, 13-6 defeat to USA. They then lost 53-17 to Italy and it is a pity that the schedule has been quite unfair to them and the other minnows as they gear up for their third game in just ten days.
A positive to come from the Italy game was the fact Alexander Yanyushkin became the first ever Russian World Cup try scorer and Ladbrokes offer a market for the first Russian try scorer in Sunday's match, with Yanyushkin a very tempting 18/1.
Russia have only won two of ten matches during 2011 and it is tough to see them adding to that tally, with Ladbrokes going 1/100 on the Irish double result and Ireland can be backed at 10/11 with -48 point deficit in the handicap betting.
