Following the decision by the South Africans to leave their regular first team players at home, it is little wonder why that Boylesports Bookmakers have made Australia emphatic 2/7 odds on favourites to win this first match of the 2011 Tri Nations series. They also go 5/2 against South Africa and 22/1 the draw.
The ‘Springboks’ have been widely criticised for their decision to leave 21 players from their World Cup squad back home, but the truth is that it is an understandable policy with the Rugby World Cup following on so quickly after the Tri Nations concludes. Besides Australia can be accused of a similar policy if their team selected for the shock home defeat against Samoa last week is anything to go by.
That 23-32 defeat by Samoa has prompted Aussie coach, Robbie Deans to drop Matt Giteau and recall several of his other potential match winning stars for this game. Back in place of Giteau comes the hero of the Super Rugby season, Quade Cooper at fly half, along with the exciting James O’Connor, Digby Ioane and Kurtley Beale who will be restored to the backs. Up front, James Horwill and Rob Simmons get the second row berths and the brilliant David Pocock is back as open side flanker. It is a team that looks like it has only winning on its mind, which could mean that the South Africans will be very much on the back foot on Saturday.
The Springboks on the other hand have a barely recognisable team, which includes three debutants. It also includes former captain, John Smits, winning his 103rd cap at hooker, Ruan Pienaar, who plays number nine for Ulster, at scrum half and the outstanding dead ball kicker, Morne Steyn at number ten. The selection of Bjorn Basson, joint top try scorer from Super Rugby on the wing is a definite sign of positive intent as is the inclusion of the often mesmerising Juan de Jongh at inside centre. It is a team that certainly has its merits, but pitching it against an Australian team in Sydney is quite likely to end badly for them
With so many potential match winners in the Wallaby starting line-up it would make sense to back one of those to be the first player to score a try. The favourite in this particular market is James O’Connor and why not, he is a seriously big threat to the Springboks and with odds of 9/1 with Boyles he is worth taking the chance on. The same Bookmaker is also offering odds of 7/2 about an Australian try being the First Scoring Play, which is decent enough value and could be backed in a double along with the First Tryscorer.
After the shock defeat against Samoa last week, the Wallabies will be all out to win this match and against a weakened Springbok team they should comfortably do so. The statistics favour Australia too, they have won ten of the last twelve encounters between the two teams on Australian soil and have beaten the ‘Boks’ on each of the four occasions that they have met in Sydney. An Australian win therefore is very much ‘on the cards’ here but the 2/7 odds represent no sort of value, however the 10/11 for a -8 available in the Handicap market is a much better option. Punters might also want to consider the 5/1 odds on offer from Boylesports for an Australian win by a points difference of between 11-15, which is something like the scoreline expected by most pundits.
