London Wasps face a monumental task to qualify for the knockout stages of the Heineken Cup as they take on the defending champions Toulouse on Sunday. Not only do they need to beat the French side but they need to beat them heavily and Paddy Power bookmakers have them at 17/10 in the betting to clinch a win. Toulouse are favourites for the final Pool Six match at Adams Park and are 4/9 on in the betting, while the draw can be backed at an industry best of 20/1.
Tony Hanks' Wasps are currently second in Pool Six and they need a bonus point win and other results elsewhere to go their way to finish as one of the best runners up in the competition and qualify for the Heineken Cup last eight. Hanks makes two changes to his side in the hunt for that victory as Dom Waldouck and Richard Birkett come in for Riki Flutey and James Cannon. When the two sides met in France in October Toulouse won 18-16 and Sunday promises to be an equally close and enthralling affair.
Much will rest on the shoulders of scrum half Joe Simpson who has been in inspired form of late and he could well force his way into the England Six Nations squad if he continues his fine form. But Simpson and his Wasps teammates will be up against it as they host the defending champions who are riding on a wave of confidence at the moment. Toulouse have won all five of their Pool matches so far and will be going for a sixth on Sunday, although interestingly no side who has won all their Pool games has gone on to win the Heineken Cup.
Toulouse are on an 11 game winning run in Europe and last lost to Cardiff Blues back in 2009. With that in mind they might be worth a look in the handicap market with PaddyPower.com as they are offered at 10/11 with a handicap of -5. However, they do make nine changes to the side that beat Newport Gwent Dragons 17-3 last weekend, and even though they are excellent replacements we fancy that might disrupt their rhythm slightly. The double result of a half time Wasps win and full time Wasps win catches the eye as an 11/4 bet with Paddy Power bookmakers.
We fancy a pumped up Wasps could win this must-win clash and end Toulouse's winning run but it could ultimately be a fruitless win as we cannot see them gaining the winning margin they require. The Wasps win by a margin of 1-5 points looks decent value at 5/1 in the betting with Paddy Power and that would be an excellent victory but not enough to gain passage to the knockout stages.
