With only a week to recover from their thumping in their Tri Nations opening encounter against bitter rivals, New Zealand, the Springboks come to Wellington looking for a huge improvement. The All Blacks dominated proceedings more or less throughout the 80 minutes last week in Auckland and ran in four tries, playing attacking rugby that the South Africans simply could not contain. The four tries that New Zealand scored were shared between the forwards and backs, but it was their running ability on the counter-attack, which was the decisive factor. Centre’s Maa Nonu and Conrad Smith both had big games for the All Blacks and both scored deserved tries. In fact Nonu looked in superb form and would be our choice to get the first try in Wellington for which he can be backed to do at 12/1 with Paddy Power.
For the Springboks to get ‘back on track’ and win this game they are going to have to produce the performance of a lifetime. Similar reversals have been known in the past and as defending Tri Nations Champions, as well as World Champions, they feel that they are capable of it. Bookmakers generally have not written a comeback off completely, Paddy power have them ay t 23/10 to retain the Tri Nations, but more ominously they have the All Blacks as 1/2 odds on and they will be a lot shorter than that should they achieve their expected win in this.
