Wales v Samoa Odds: George North heads the first try scorer betting

Wales will be looking for their first win of the Rugby World Cup on Sunday morning as they take on a physical Samoa at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton. After the disappointment of losing to South Africa, the Welsh will know the importance of picking up a win to boost their chances of qualifying from Pool D, with Ladbrokes making them the 2/7 favourites.

Samoa are not to be underestimated though and they can be backed at odds of 3/1, with the draw priced 28/1.

It is Samoa who have won the past two World Cup meetings with Wales as they caused two of the greatest upsets in the history of the competition - winning 16-13 in 1991 and they repeated the trick in 1999 as they came through 38-34.

This Wales side will be wary of following their predecessors into the record books for the wrong reasons and their performance against South Africa last weekend will have left them buoyant. They lost out 17-16 to the reigning world champions, despite being the better side for much of the game, and few would argue the fact they deserved something from the match.

A low start at the weekend cost them and Samoa could provide interest in the race to ten points market, where they can be backed at odds of 13/8 with Ladbrokes.com, which looks good value as they picked up a decent result of their own in the first match.

They destroyed Namibia 49-12 in their opening match and it is well worth remembering that they overcame, an admittedly under strength, Australia 32-23 in July. The Samoans are an ever-improving side in the world of rugby and their physical approach could cause Wales problems this weekend.

Samoa's Alesana Tuilagi will be a well known quantity to Wales players and fans alike as the Leicester winger was the leading try scorer in the Aviva Premiership last season. He crossed the line 13 times last term and helped himself to a hat-trick against Namibia, with Ladbrokes offering a tempting 12/1 for him to be first try scorer on Sunday.

Wales have their own try scoring threat in the giant George North, who will relish the physical nature of this weekend's match. He became Wales' youngest ever try scorer on his debut and he is 9/1 favourite to score the first try against Samoa.

We fancy this has the makings of an enthralling clash and Ladbrokes price Samoa 10/11 in the handicap market with a head start of +9 points. That looks a decent punt as both sides are impressive in defence and it could be a close run thing.

Ultimately Wales should pull through though and they have won the past two meetings with the Samoans. They won 17-13 in the last meeting between the two in 2009 and a similarly close game could be in store, with the Wales win by a margin of 1-5 points looking good value at 5/1.
