Scotland are back in Rugby World Cup action on Wednesday morning when they meet Georgia for the very first time in an international match. The Scots are huge 1/12 odds on favourites for the Pool B clash at Invercargill but Georgia are not to be underestimated and can be backed at odds of 8/1 with Ladbrokes, while the draw is a 33/1 punt.
Andy Robinson's Scotland side can ill afford to underestimate anyone after they were given a huge scare by Romania at the weekend. They could only beat the little fancied Romanians 34-24 during an ill disciplined display and even then they had to come from behind to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start.
Robinson has rung the changes from that side as eleven players make way, with only Sean Lamont, Max Evans, Allan Jacobsen and Kelly Brown retaining their places, although Robinson has said the changes were planned before the tournament.
The one bright spot to come from the victory was the four tries scored by Scotland and Max Evans and Sean Lamont share favouritism at odds of 7/1 to be the first tryscorer on Wednesday.
The concern for Robinson will be the fact his side were very slow around the breakdown and gave away far too many penalties against Romania. Georgia are a far better side than Romania and it could be worth a cheeky punt on Wednesday's first scoring play to be a Georgia penalty at industry best priced odds of 9/4 with Ladbrokes.com.
Georgia recently beat Romania and are ranked as the best northern hemisphere side outside of the Six Nations. They have aspirations to play in the Six Nations, although they face a huge task to pick up a win this week.
They have only won one match in eight rugby World Cup matches, 30-0 against Namibia in 2007, and have only scored six tries in their two previous appearances in the tournament. Their main threat will undoubtedly come from top points scorer, Merab Kvirikashvili, who has scored 35 points in World Cups.
The Georgians are a strong, powerful side who are unbeaten since 2009, and we fancy they will head to Invercagill with plenty of ambition and plenty to prove. They will look to attack Scotland and over 43.5 points in the match could be worth a look, while Georgia look a very decent evens punt in the handicap market with an advantage of +18 points - but an outright win might be a bit too much to ask at this stage.
