The England v Australia Cook Cup rugby union clash this Saturday at Twickenham could signal the re-emergence of England as a serious threat to otherwise dominant southern hemisphere sides, if they can continue to improve from where they left off last week in the somewhat unlucky loss to New Zealand. The Bookmakers however remain unconvinced and make the Wallabies favourite, with Bet365 offering them at 8/13 odds on to win, with England at 11/8.
England of course have given plenty of reasons for optimism before of course, but manager, Martin Johnson, knows that this week his side badly need to deliver as they have only had one win in their last six matches. That win of course came against the Wallabies back in June where they demonstrated that in the scrum they are in charge and this could be the telling factor in Saturday’s match.
Australia admittedly come into the match with wins over the All Blacks and Wales in the last two weeks, but in both of those games that failed to convince plaudits that they had resolved their front row problems. In fact against Wales last week the Australian front row was embarrassing, which is why Welsh fans were particularly disgruntled that they lost to them.
The big plus factor however for Australia is the slickness of their backs, who look to be the most potent on the planet right now. If given the ball in any sort of space or from the breakdown they are ruthless, which is why England will need to dominate up front and deprive them of possession. This was evidenced last week, particularly by the try scored by Australia’s outstanding full back, Kurtley Beale, who looks a more than reasonable bet with odds of 12/1 from bet365 to score the first try in this match, which incidentally will be their 100th against England.
Talking of front row’s, both teams make a change at hooker for this week’s encounter, Australia bring back Stephen Moore, while Dylan Hartley, who scored England’s try last week against the All Blacks after coming on from the bench gets a start this week ahead of Steve Thompson.
England will continue with same set of backs but will hope that Ben Foden can add even more penetration to his game as he showed last week, particularly in the second half, where he dazzled on occasions. The Northampton Saints full back has been a real plus factor since establishing himself in the team last season and along with his club team mate, Chris Ashton, provide a very serious cutting edge which is capable of converting running possession into tries. Ashton has odds of 10/1 and Foden 14/1 from Bet365.com to be the first try scorer of this match.
Despite only winning twice in the last matches against Australia at Twickenham we take England to come out on top in this match, but predict that it will be a very close affair. A win by between 1-5 points will surely be close to the mark and one that it is worth backing with odds of 5/1 from bet365.com.
