Check the betting preview for the 2011 Rugby World Cup England v Scotland clash.
England entertain Scotland this Sunday at Twickenham in the penultimate round of the Six Nations knowing that victory would set them up for both the Triple Crown and Grand Slam in their final match next week in Dublin against Ireland. Bookmakers across the board certainly see an England victory as a formality and have England as huge odds on favourites to win. Bet365 for instance quote England at 1/20 to win, with Scotland at 10/1 and 50/1 the draw, these are odds that do no favours for English backers, but Scotland fans will definately be having some, particularly as they drew with England 12 months ago 15-15 at Murrayfield.
Scotland has not won a Calcutta Cup at Twickenham since 1983 but coach Andy Robinson believes he has the team to cause problems for anyone, provided they cut out the mistakes that have been responsible for them losing their opening three games. It is for that reason that Robinson has made four changes and a positional tweak for the match, Strong running winger Simon Danielli gets the nod over Nikki Walker and exciting centre Joe Ansbro returns after recovering from the concussion that kept him out of the 21-18 defeat by Ireland. Much to everyone’s surprise Rory Lawson comes back at scrum half, with the unlucky Mike Blair, who played well against Ireland, starting from the bench. Meanwhile Nathan Hines comes in at blind side flanker, allowing Kelly Brown to return to his favoured position at number eight.
Should England win the match it will set up their clash with Ireland next week perfectly where, if Ireland defeat Wales this weekend, a battle royal could ensue for both the Six Nations championship and the Triple Crown not ignoring of course the opportunity for England to win their first Grand Slam since 2003. Bet365.com in fact quote England at 4/7 to win the Grand Slam, the same price to win the Triple Crown and offer 11/4 about Scotland winning the 'Wooden Spoon'.
Much of England’s success this year has to be credited to the coaching duo of Mike Ford and Brian Smith who have been working tirelessly with Martin Johnson to mould them into the fifteen man running rugby team it has become this season. Some of their rugby has been likened to New Zealand and at present there does not seem to be any obvious weakness. Johnson will undoubtedly continue with the same starting line up as he put out against France with the exception of the injured prop, Andrew Sheridan, who will be replaced by Alex Corbisiero, he in turn will be replaced on the bench by Paul Doran-Jones. Flanker, Tom Croft, fit to play again after fracturing his shoulder in the autumn international against South Africa will also occupy a place on the bench.
If the Bookmakers are correct then England will win this match by a country mile, but it would probably fairer to suggest that they should win the match quite emphatically, particularly if they start where they left off against France. In Chris Ashton, Mark Cueto and Ben Foden they have three world class finishers and it will be hard to imagine, that all three, particularly the 2011 Six Nations top Tryscorer, Ashton, will not add further tries in this match.
England of course will know that Scotland have Chris Paterson to keep Scotland in contention if they give away too many penalties in their own half. They will also have plenty of respect for the returning Ansbro, who was superb for the Scots against France, he is very direct and could test the England captain, Mike Tindall in the midfield. That said an England win by between 21-25 points looks a good bet at 13/2 with Bet 365, who also offer 11/1 about England achieving victory by between 31-35 points.
