England remain third favourites to win the 2012 Six Nations after caretaker coach Stuart Lancaster announced a fresh looking 32 man squad for this year's tournament. The bookmakers remain unmoved on England's chances and they still have plenty to prove from 11/4 in the latest betting with Bet 365.
Lancaster has taken over the reins from Martin Johnson on an interim basis and he will get his first taste of an England match when they travel to Scotland for their opening match of the tournament on 4th February. Lancaster has opted to get rid of the tried and trusted by naming nine uncapped players in his England squad as they look to build a side that is capable of challenging for the 2015 World Cup.
The likes of Mike Tindall and Danny Care have been overlooked, while Jonny Wilkinson has retired and Toby Flood and Manu Tuilagi are injured. It leaves the squad with a youthful look and the inclusion of Owen Farrell is hoped to herald the start of an exciting new era.
It is remarkable to think that less than 12 months ago England were Six Nations champions and they came within a game of doing the Grand Slam. They are 15/2 to do the Grand Slam this year and 5/2 to win the Triple Crown after the 2011 World Cup debacle saw them humbled by France at the quarter-final stage.
It is France who currently head the Six Nations betting at an industry best priced 7/4 with B365. The French won the Six Nations Grand Slam in 2010 but fell to defeats to England and Italy on their way to finishing second last year. They put all that behind them to somehow reach the final of the World Cup in the autumn and they were unfortunate to lose 8-7 to New Zealand in the final in the end.
France had looked as clueless as England at times but they produced the goods when it mattered, not least when securing a very fortuitous 9-8 victory over Wales in the semi-finals. Wales will be looking for revenge after eventually finishing fourth in the World Cup and Warren Gatland looks to be building an exciting rugby side. They were still in with a chance of winning the Six Nations heading into the final weekend last year but fell short and they look a far better outfit this time. Their attacking style of play drew plenty of praise at the World Cup and they look a decent punt at 5/2 to win the Six Nations with Bet365.com.
Elsewhere, 2009 Grand Slam winners Ireland are 6/1 to win the Six Nations after they denied England the Grand Slam last year. That looks quite a long price at this stage and they are worth looking out for as they play three matches at home this year.
Scotland are 18/1 after they finished second from bottom, level on points with Italy, last term, while Italy are a massive 125/1 as they look to avoid picking up the wooden spoon again.
