Rugby World Cup - Ireland v France Betting Preview - click here.
Ireland travel to Wales on Saturday for their crucial Six Nations clash as both sides maintain slim hopes of winning the tournament. Both sides will hope that Scotland do them a favour by beating England at Twickenham on Sunday, while the match at the Millennium Stadium could not be more evenly poised. Paddy Power makes Wales slight favourites at 8/11 in the betting, with the draw at 20/1, but we fancy Ireland to pull off a narrow win and they can be backed at an industry best of 11/10.
The Irish still maintain decent chance of winning the Six Nations and face England in their final match in Dublin and will be hoping to still have a chance of Triple Crown glory by then. They beat Scotland 21-18 last time out in another close match and if their fixtures so far are anything to go by then Saturday promises to be a thriller. They beat Italy with a last gasp drop goal in the first match before being unfortunate to lose to France in a tight affair, but they came out on the right side against Scotland.
Declan Kidney has kept faith with the same 22 that beat Scotland and they head to Cardiff in high spirits. They have only tasted defeat once in the last ten in the Welsh capital and have won four of their last five against Wales, including the 2009 Grand Slam decider at the Millennium Stadium. Furthermore, they have scored six tries in their last two Six Nations matches this year and will be looking to take that expansive style to Wales this weekend.
The tryscorer betting has an interesting look this week as Wales' Shane Williams needs two more tries to equal the individual record of 24 for most career tries, while Ireland's captain Brian O'Driscoll needs just one more try to equal the feat. Williams is 9/1 favourite to score the first try with Paddy Power or 23/10 to score anytime, while he could be worth backing to score two tries or more in the match and reach the record at 14/1. O'Driscoll meanwhile is 12/1 to score first or he looks really good value to score a try anytime at 10/3 in the betting.
Saturday's match sees two of the most indisciplined sides in the competition go head-to-head, as Wales have conceded 34 penalties and Ireland 36. Warren Gatland has responded by making changes to his team with Stephen Jones and Morgan Stoddard losing out and Leigh Halfpenny and Jonathan Davies coming in, which in turn means James Hook will return to fly half.
Wales beat Italy last time out but have not won at home in six matches, since they last beat the Italians in March of last year, and Ireland have won eight of the last eleven against Wales. We fancy Ireland will edge this one and can be backed at 10/11 with PaddyPower.com in the handicap betting with an advantage of +2 points.
It looks set to be a close encounter and three of the last four between the two have involved a winning margin of 10 points or less, and the Ireland win by 1-5 points this weekend could be the way to go at 9/2 with Paddy Power.
