Ireland v USA Betting: Irish long odds on favourites for Pool C opener

Ireland make their debut in the 2011 Rugby World Cup on Sunday in New Plymouth, with Paddy Power making them long odds on favourites to beat the USA in their Pool C opener. The Irish don't come into the tournament in good form however and this is reflected in the handicap betting. Ireland are 1/200 to win the match, with the USA 20/1 shots and the unlikely draw available to back at 80/1.

Ireland signed off an inconsistent 2011 Six Nations championship with a good win over England last winter, to deny Martin Johnson's side a Grand Slam. However, since the squad have re-assembled for the World Cup this summer Declan Kidney's side are without a win in all four of their warm up matches.

The defeats in warm up include a 10-6 loss in Scotland, a 19-12 defeat in Paris and two home defeats to France and England. Paddy Power set the handicap mark at -36 points for Ireland, which seems a little on the short side thanks to their form coming into the tournament. With this in mind, it might be worth backing the Americans at even money with a 36 point head start.

The USA haven't had a great summer and lack the quality of opponent to get warmed up for the World Cup. The Eagles lost 87-8 to the England Saxons in Northampton in June and also lost 44-13 to Tonga during their tour of England. The Americans did pick up a win however at the expense of Russia and also went close just being edged out by Canada in Toronto in August.

It'll be a big task for the Americans and Ireland should win this relatively easily. Irish winger Tommy Bowe is the 6/1 shot with Paddy Power to score the first try of their World Cup campaign, whilst skipper Brian O'Driscoll can be backed at 8/1. The Irish are 1/5 to score first and it's odds on that a back scores the first try. It's 23/10 that any forward scores the first try, whilst there could be some value backing someone in the midfield to score forst, with number 9, 10, 12 or 13 are odds of 13/8 to land the first try.
