The Irish will be looking to produce another crushing performance against an English side on Saturday evening as Leinster host Leicester Tigers in their Heineken Cup quarter-final clash. A sell out is expected at the Aviva Stadium, the scene of Ireland's 24-8 win over England in the Six Nations, and Leinster go in as hot favourites at 4/9 in the betting with Paddy Power. Leicester can be backed at 7/4, with the draw available at 20/1, for what should be a thrilling clash.
Many of Leicester's England players will still be wearing the bruises of that thumping by Ireland which ended their Grand Slam hopes, while the Leinster side is made up of more than half the Irish side that emerged victorious. Brian O'Driscoll and Jonny Sexton were influential in that win and will be looking to get one over on the likes of Toby Flood and Ben Youngs once more.
Leinster's outside centre O'Driscoll ran in a try that day and PaddyPower offer 9/5 for the first try on Saturday to be scored by a number 9, 10, 12 or 13. Leicester's Ben Youngs meanwhile will want to create better memories at the Aviva Stadium after he was sinbinned and subbed during a torrid performance.
Saturday's match is a repeat of the 2009 Heineken Cup final, which Leinster won 19-16 at Murrayfield following a stunning comeback. The two teams have met ten times before in European competition, with five wins apiece, and something has got to give this weekend.
Leinster lost 24-23 to table topping Munster in the Magners League last weekend, a result that leaves them in fourth place. It was only their second defeat in twelve matches in all competitions and roared on by a vociferous home crowd they hold the edge for this match. Leinster can be backed in the double result betting market at 10/11, or for a little more value PaddyPower.com offer 11/10 for a team to win both halves.
Leicester meanwhile top the Aviva Premiership after their controversial 17-13 win over Harlequins last weekend. They are now three points clear of Saracens, although the win came at a cost as Marcos Ayerza is suspended after he was sent off for fighting during the match. It has been a welcome return to form for Leicester as it made it two wins from two after they had lost three of their previous six fixtures. The return of their England contingent from international duty has had much to do with that recovery, although they qualified for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals by virtue of being the best second placed team in the Pools.
Three of their last four fixtures have involved a score margin of four points or less and Leicester can be backed in the handicap betting with an advantage of +5 points at 10/11. Like the 2009 final, we fancy Leinster will just edge this encounter though and Paddy Power offer 10/3 for a Leinster winning margin of 1-5 points, with Biarritz or Toulouse awaiting the winner in the semi-finals.
