With new sponsors Aviva having taken over from Guinness the English Premiership gets underway this weekend with several cracking matches; the top one being between champions, Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints who finished so close to double honours last season. This game will be televised live on Sky Sports 3 on Sunday afternoon, while London Irish v Saracens and Wasps v Harlequins matches will be live on ESPN on Saturday afternoon. There could barely be a better game to get the season off than this one at Vicarage Road on Saturday afternoon. Saracens who finished third in the league table and were runners up in the Grand Final to Leicester last season, will want to pick up from where they left off last year, but will have to do so with a couple of important changes being made.
The Bookmakers make ‘Sarries’ odds on favourites to win the match with a best price of 4/7 offered by Bet365.com
Although Saracens have lost their principle goal kicker from last season, Glen Jackson they have two adequate replacements in new fly half, Derick Hougaard and Alex Goode at full back. It is expected that these two will share the kicking duties. They have also lost the vastly experienced Justin Marshall who has finally decided to call it a day after a magnificent career.
Captain, Steve Borthwick, now back to full fitness will want to impress from the outset this season, so a big game can be expected from the former England skipper and a big game too can be assumed by the excellent new signing at scrum half, Richard Wrigglesworth. Coach, Brendan Ventnor is sure to start with the very talented Alex Goode at full back and David Strettle is an exciting newcomer to play on the wing.
London Irish may have problems as the season develops by having such a small squad, however they should be at full strength for this match, which means a debuts for new half backs Darren Allison at number 9 and Dan Bowden at 10. It can be assumed that ‘Irish’ will have lost none of their line-out dominance from the last couple of seasons, but whether or not that facet alone will be enough to win is doubtful.
We take Saracens to win this match with a reasonable degree of comfort and have made our match tips below.
Match Odds
4/7 Saracens
11/8 London Irish
18/1 Draw
2010/11 Aviva Premiership Odds Comparison, Table and Fixtures
Selection 1: Saracens win by between 6-10 points @ 11/2 (£25 Bet wins £137.50)
Selection 2: Saracens to open scoring with a penalty @ 13/8 (£25 Bet wins over £40)
In the second of two televised matches, Wasps take on Harlequins in what always will be a tremendous encounter. The two great rivals will take to the field with Wasps starting as 1/2 odds on favourites with ‘Quins’ at 13/8.

Wasps who will start this season as a far more settled outfit will be looking to get into what they consider to be their rightful place in the top four in the league. Phil Vickery is back at full fitness and he will rejoin fellow veterans in the pack, Simon Shaw and Serge Betsen. Andy Powell s a very significant signing for the back row where he will be joined by skipper, Tom Rees in a formidable looking pack of forwards.
Although no Danny Cipriani this season, he will be replaced at number 10 by Dave Walder, a new signing from the Super 14,s. Wasps also welcome back England centre, Riki Flutey who will should real class to an exciting set of backs.
Harlequins who could only finish 8th last year will still be trying to put the ‘bloodgate’ scandal behind them, which we think disadvantages them at the outset of the season. They will benefit greatly from new coach Conor O’Shea and strong performances can be expected from the English contingent of players such as Nick Easter and Ugo Monye, but we do not think that they will be as ready for this match as Wasps and it would come as no surprise to see them lose this match by more than ten points, making the handicap as a an excellent betting market this week.
Match Odds
1/2 Wasps
13/8 Harlequins
20/1 Draw
Selection 1: Wasps at -5 @ 10/11, Harlequins at +5 @ 10/11
Selection 2: Wasps to win by 11-15 points @ 13/2.
